Local Elections 2003
Why do the Social Democratic Alliance, the Liberal Party and the Alliance of Independents run together in the local elections and plan to merge into one party? (summary)
Chisinau, 3 April 2003
The Social Democratic Alliance, the Liberal Party and the Alliance of Independents have agreed to run in one bloc in the local elections and later merge into one party. This decision has been prompted by a number of reasons, the most important of which is the people's expectation that parties of democratic and reform orientation unite. Such a process has been underway, with regard to both left and right wing parties, since the parliamentary elections of February 2001 when the Communist Party of Moldova won the constitutional majority in Parliament.
The main message of the electoral bloc "Social Liberal Alliance "Our Moldova" (SLAOM) to its voters is that by joining important political forces of centre-right and centre-left the bloc aims to be real alternative to the communist government in Moldova locally, and later, nationally. As for the merge, the political manifesto of the new party will combine the reforming character of the liberals with the leftists' concern for viable and efficient social programmes.
